Last Light

Unlike how I approach most of my artwork, I started this piece without a story to tell and only a rough sketch to guide me. After several weeks of painting without a map, I started picking up on certain colors and lighting effects that pointed me towards a sunset. I was loving how the light source seemed to be pouring through a desert valley at a low level, illuminating the sky and clouds above while barely grazing the landscape with its fading light. As I often paint in complete silence, I spend hours listening to nothing but my own thoughts, and death is often a topic I ponder at great length. More specifically, I often wonder how the light of one’s own life illuminates the world around you over the years. I look at this painting as a reflection on a life lived, looking back as the noise and confusion of the day-to-day drops into shadow, and everything with meaning remains alight until the very end. The last light.
